Scope
Seneca Companies General Contracting division was hired to build a Casey’s convenience store in Des Moines, IA.
The project scope consisted of demolishing the previous storefront and forecourt, removing the equipment including dispensers and tank equipment and building a new, larger store from the ground up and installing a diesel canopy in addition to the primary canopy.
The Seneca team extracted the existing fuel tanks and petroleum equipment, demolished the existing building and canopy structures and removed all utilities to property lines for previous store. The site was then leveled out to the new expanded property lines. New underground storage tanks and product lines were installed along with foundations for the new structures which were set back further off NE 14th Street for better accessibility. The Seneca team installed Dover Fueling Solutions® (DFS) Wayne Ovation® fueling dispensers under the new canopies. A unique feature of this site is the expanded diesel canopy – making it more convenient for over-the-road trucks. The store features a full kitchen, walk-in beer cave and full beverage counter, as well as custom signage.
Challenges
The Seneca team was faced with the challenge of navigating many existing utilities in the city right of way and coordinating construction schedules with the city’s road/utility projects taking place on both side streets. A new underground storm sewer retention system was installed at the site and communication with the city of Des Moines was essential for connecting to their storm sewer piping project under construction at the same time.
Due to proactive communication and a positive relationship with the city inspectors and subcontractor partners, the team was able to keep the site running smoothly without interfering with the buildings and streets around the site.
Outcome
This project allowed our team to be able to utilize proficient communication between multiple external parties as well as work cohesively with multiple Seneca divisions to build the site from the ground up and ensure a smooth construction process. The client is very happy with the Casey’s convenience store project completed by the Seneca General Contracting team.
